Kearney Public Schools is wanting to purchase a new Yamaha Clavinova piano as well as a set of ukuleles for each elementary music classroom.

Music teachers use their classroom pianos on a daily basis with all grade levels. Pianos are used to teach the curriculum and assist students in matching pitch. The KPS Game Plan curriculum resource has several songs that require piano accompaniment. Pianos are also used for annual talent shows, Veterans Day programs, and holiday sing-alongs. Pianos are necessary to audition students for honor choirs such as Children's All State and Sing Around Nebraska. Pianos also assist in teaching students repertoire so they can perform successfully. Updating the pianos will allow teachers to record accompaniments for music programs and melodies for substitutes. The current pianos do not function properly, require floppy disks, and take several minutes to turn on. We will be purchasing 10 pianos. The cost is $4,000 per piano for a total of $40,000.

This ukulele project will bring an opportunity for students to experience a stringed instrument. Students will learn the fundamentals of playing a stringed instrument including: strumming, chord positions, and finger placement. Students will discover how string instruments produce sound through vibrations and be able to improvise simple chord progressions. Students will even learn to accompany themselves while singing. We will be purchasing 10 sets of (27) ukuleles. The cost is $40 per ukulele, for a total of $10,800.
